If there is one thing I've learned as an HR Professional and a Compliance Professional the fact culture is everything. When leaders and employees talk about their organizations, the conversation inevitably leads to culture. When people consider changing jobs and look at new companies to join, consciously or subconsciously, people think about the company's culture. With culture having such a substantial interest in the decisions people make about companies, it is logical for any HR or Compliance Professional to use culture as a critical factor in understanding how best to implement a practical ethics and compliance or HR program.
It's all about engagement. How can you convince employees that ethics and compliance are valuable components of your company's DNA?
The way you do it is to structure ethics and compliance as "must-haves" for any enaged culture. Why? Culture is all about the people. Every great company is made up of dynamic people.
Positioning the ethics and compliance program to be a true competitive advantage for your organization will not only enhance the program's effectiveness but will incline leaders to figure out how they can best use compliance and HR programs to enhance the culture. When customers know the company, they are dealing with not only takes care of its people, but have the expectation that employees will be ethical, this enhances the company's reputation...a definite competitive advantage. Remember that term...competitive advantage. That is a topic for another post. Stay tuned to upcoming posts as we start our series on whether culture and ethics are dependent or independent of each other.
